Have you ever heard that therapy is a "crutch", or is the "easy way" out?
Be encouraged to know that any time you seek to make substantial changes in your life--as can be the case while in therapy (or in learning any new skill), things can seem much, much harder before they get easier. Usually clients feel an initial sense of relief and hope, as they realize they don't have to face things feeling alone. And then the real work begins, and sometimes your therapist is the last person you want to see! For other clients who are generally coping rather well, but are getting hung up on one or two issues, therapy will involve more focused and fewer strategy sessions.
I am not a therapist who tends to see symptoms through the lens of pathology; rather, I consider most behavioral patterns to result from clients' best efforts to cope with circumstances they have encountered in their past. Sometimes these patterns stop being helpful and end up becoming part of the problem, and need to be looked at and adjusted.
Research shows that one of the most important factors in achieving your goals in therapy is the working relationship with your therapist. It's so important to feel comfortable with whomever you decide to work with--whether that ends up being me, or someone else. For this reason, I offer a free 1/2 hour consult in which we can discuss your situation and assess whether you feel you'd like to proceed with therapy, and also whether I feel that I am the best fit for you professionally.
This way, you can feel confident in your choice of your therapist before committing financially.
